Mr. Ogan used a lot of biblical, patriotic, philosophical, and literary references throughout the book. He also included personal comments that may include references to persons who had no relationship to Vinton County. This sometimes random and unconnected use of name-dropping presented me with a problem of whether I would include these names which are actually irrelevant to Vinton County history. I decided that I would not include these names of biblical, literary, or famous people as long as it was absolutely certain from the context that Mr. Ogan was only using these people to illustrate some point he was trying to make. Chapter 5 is a long rambling story about the worldwide adventures of someone who was related to someone in Vinton County. In Chapter 8 there is a long narrative about the Confederate raider John Morgan, including much of his life history. I have not indexed the many names in these two chapters that do not relate to the inhabitants of Vinton County. If there was any possibility at all that the person actually had some historical connection to Vinton County, I included the name in the index.
